Dark and moody, the dimly lit space features heavy, boxy lamps hanging from the vaulted, a tiled ceiling, large oval mirrors on bare brick walls and a dramatic, copper-topped mahogany bar. British owner Kathryn Weatherup transformed a former church to create the bar, and designed the atmospheric interior herself. And if you can’t decide which to go for, the friendly and well-versed bartenders will be happy to guide you to a libation that will suit your taste-buds perfectly. There’s also a weekly bartender’s special. Try the Puritan gin, dry vermouth, yellow chartreuse and orange bitters or the Cablegramß- rye, house made ginger syrup and fresh lime juice. There’s an emphasis on old-time ingredients such as rye and gin. The cocktail list is minimalistic but perfectly thought out, featuring a selection of ten expertly mixed choices which combine classics and more experimental creations. With bar staff trained in the game by Milk and Honey alumnus Sasha Petraske, the drinks are, unsurprisingly, consistently well executed. The bar scene on Prospect Heights’ Vanderbilt Avenue is growing apace and one of the more recent and most popular – additions is this sleek and stylish cocktail bar.
